Question: Christopher Columbus?
Ans: Christopher Columbus was born in
Genoa, Italy. He guessed rightly that with west wards travelling one can reach
India. He discussed his plan with the king of Portugal. King of Portugal was
skeptical about his plan. Queen of Spain, Isabella, accepted his plan and
provided necessary funds. He started his voyage with 3 ships and 87 sailors. In
August 1492, he started his voyage from the port of Palos, Spain. From the king
of Spain he took a letter addressing the Chinese Emperor. Columbus misunderstood Bahama Islands with
Asian shore. All his voyages were intended to reach Japan, India and Indonesian
islands. Thrice he misunderstood the Central American Islands of Caribbean and
Bahamas with India. He named the people of this place as ‘Red Indians’. Now
also we call these islands as West Indies. With this Europeans came in touch
with a new world. Chilies, potatoes and
other things were introduced to Europeans by Americans. With the riches from
this new world Spain enjoyed a superior status in Europe for a half century.
