2. Non–Governmental Organisation (NGO)
Definition:
NGOs are voluntary, non-profit, and service-oriented organisations formed by
people outside the government system. Their main aim is to address social,
economic, cultural, and environmental issues for the welfare of society.
Characteristics:
- Independent of direct government
control.
- Non-profit orientation (surplus
is reinvested into activities).
- Works for marginalized and
disadvantaged groups.
- Relies on donations, grants,
volunteers, and community participation.
Functions:
- Delivering services (health
camps, education, disaster relief).
- Advocacy and lobbying
(campaigning for laws on child rights, women’s safety).
- Capacity building (training
self-help groups).
Examples:
- India: CRY (Child Rights and You), HelpAge India.
- International: Amnesty International, Oxfam.
