How England evolved as Nation State? |
Ans: By 1500 A.D. England and Scotland,
two nation states evolved in British islands. After 100 years war (1337-1453),
English kings pertained their concentration to their territories only. This is
one reason for the increase of national fervor in England nations. England
incurred losses due to the War of Roses (1455 – 1485). Due to this also
national sentiment increased in England and longed for nation state.
King
Henry of Tudor dynasty ascended the throne in 1485 A.D., and ruled efficiently
till 1509 A.D. Henry VII introduced ‘Star Chamber of Court’. This diminished
the influence of nobility. Crown lands were cultivated properly and collected
land revenue strictly from nobles and feudal lords.
Matrimonial alliances played
important role in strengthening England. Arthur, son of Henry VII married
Catherine, daughter of Spain ruler Ferdinand and Isabella. After untimely death of Arthur, Henry VIII,
son of Henry VII married Catherine.
Margaret, daughter of Henry VII, was given in marriage to
James IV, ruler of Scotland.
Thus
matrimonial alliances and foreign policy strengthened England.
