Ans: India has been having cultural and
trade contacts with west since ancient times. Ancient Indian businessmen had
trade contacts with ancient Roman Empire. During medieval period Arabs captured
the intermediary place between Europe and India. Via Constantinople, Venice and
Genoa got muslin cloth and spices from Arabs and resold them to Europe.
Constantinople
was the capital of Byzantium Empire. Byzantium Emperor Constantine I built this
city and made it his capital. Finally in the year 1453, Ottoman Turk king
Mohammad II defeated Constantine XI and Christian army in the last Crusade War
to capture Constantinople. Turks tortured Christians and forbade them from
going to Eastern countries via Constantinople. It was the main cause for the
discovery of new sea route by the Europeans. Portugal, Spain and England
encouraged the gallant persons to travel long distances on sea to find route to
Eastern countries. Many brave sailors came forward to risk their lives to find
sea route to India.
