10. Characteristics of Leadership

Definition:
Leadership in NGOs means guiding and motivating individuals or groups toward achieving social goals.

Key Characteristics:

  1. Visionary: A leader must have a clear vision for change (e.g., Kailash Satyarthi’s vision to eliminate child labour).
  2. Integrity: Honest, ethical, and transparent.
  3. Empathy: Understanding community needs and feelings.
  4. Communication Skills: Ability to motivate, negotiate, and inspire.
  5. Decision-making Ability: Taking timely and effective decisions.
  6. Adaptability: Handling challenges and changing strategies when needed.
  7. Team Builder: Encouraging participation and trust among staff and volunteers.

Example:
Mahatma Gandhi is a classic example of leadership qualities—vision, empathy, and mass mobilization—applied for social change.
