10. Characteristics of Leadership
Definition:
Leadership in NGOs means guiding and motivating individuals or groups toward
achieving social goals.
Key
Characteristics:
- Visionary: A leader must have a clear vision for change (e.g.,
Kailash Satyarthi’s vision to eliminate child labour).
- Integrity: Honest, ethical, and transparent.
- Empathy: Understanding community needs and feelings.
- Communication Skills: Ability to motivate, negotiate, and inspire.
- Decision-making Ability: Taking timely and effective decisions.
- Adaptability: Handling challenges and changing strategies when
needed.
- Team Builder: Encouraging participation and trust among staff and
volunteers.
Example:
Mahatma Gandhi is a classic example of leadership qualities—vision, empathy,
and mass mobilization—applied for social change.
