14. Four International Organisations Working
in the Field of Child Welfare
Introduction:
Children’s welfare is a global concern, as millions face malnutrition, lack of
education, abuse, and displacement due to wars or disasters. International
organisations work across borders to promote the survival, protection, and
development of children.
1.
UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund):
UNICEF operates in over 190 countries. It focuses on child health, education,
nutrition, water and sanitation, and emergency response. In India, UNICEF has
worked extensively on polio eradication, child immunization, and promoting
education for girls.
2.
World Vision International:
World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organisation active in over 100 countries.
It runs child sponsorship programs and works in areas like child protection,
disaster relief, and education. In India, World Vision supports marginalized
communities in states such as Odisha and Tamil Nadu.
3.
Plan International:
Founded in 1937, Plan International works for child rights and equality for
girls. Its campaigns focus on ending child marriage, preventing child labour,
and promoting access to quality education. For example, Plan International’s
“Because I am a Girl” campaign has gained global recognition.
4.
Save the Children (International):
One of the oldest child-focused NGOs, Save the Children works in more than 120
countries. It provides emergency relief during conflicts and disasters,
supports health and nutrition programs, and advocates for children’s rights
globally. During the Syrian refugee crisis, Save the Children played a crucial
role in providing safe spaces for children.
Conclusion:
These international organisations complement national efforts by providing
technical expertise, funding, and global advocacy. Their large-scale programs
and campaigns ensure that child welfare remains a priority in both developing
and developed nations.
