13. Four National Organisations Working in
the Field of Child Welfare
Introduction:
India has millions of children who face challenges such as poverty,
malnutrition, child labour, trafficking, and lack of education. Several
national organisations play a key role in promoting the welfare and rights of
children through direct services, advocacy, and capacity-building.
1.
Childline India Foundation (CIF):
Childline operates the 1098 toll-free helpline, available 24/7, to rescue
children in distress. It responds to issues like child abuse, child labour,
lost and runaway children, and medical emergencies. CIF also partners with
local NGOs and works closely with the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
2.
CRY (Child Rights and You):
Founded in 1979, CRY focuses on ensuring children’s right to education,
healthcare, and protection from exploitation. It works through grassroots
partners in rural and urban areas. For example, CRY has been instrumental in
increasing school enrollment and reducing child labour in states like Uttar
Pradesh and Bihar.
3.
SOS Children’s Villages of India:
This organisation provides family-like care to orphaned, abandoned, and
vulnerable children. Children are raised in “villages” under the care of
trained SOS mothers. Apart from residential care, the organisation also
supports community programs on education, vocational training, and health.
4.
Save the Children India (National Chapter):
This is the Indian wing of the global “Save the Children” organisation. It
implements projects in education, health, nutrition, and emergency relief. For
instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Save the Children India provided
educational materials and digital learning access to underprivileged children.
Conclusion:
Together, these organisations bridge the gap between government policies and
community needs. They not only provide services but also advocate for child
rights legislation and awareness across India.
